About Axarquía

Nestled in the hills east of Málaga, the Axarquía is a land shaped by sun, mountains, and centuries of tradition.

This unique region is known for its steep, terraced landscapes, where olive trees grow on rugged slopes under more than 300 days of sunshine each year. Here, farming is still largely done by hand — not by machines — preserving methods passed down through generations.

Axarquía is also home to rare olive varieties such as Verdial, perfectly adapted to the local climate. These olives produce oils that are smooth, fruity, and full of character — a true reflection of the land they come from.

More than just a place, Axarquía represents a way of life: slow, authentic, and deeply connected to nature.

Verdial – The Olive of Axarquía

One of the most distinctive olive varieties grown in Axarquía is Verdial de Vélez-Málaga, a local variety that is closely connected to the region’s landscape and climate.

Verdial olives are known for producing olive oil with a fresh, fruity and slightly sweet flavor, often with very little bitterness.

Unlike many commercial varieties grown in large flat plantations, Verdial olives grow mainly in the mountainous terrain of Axarquía. This environment gives the oil its distinctive character and authenticity.

Today, Verdial remains one of the most traditional and representative olive varieties of the region.
